Eau Claire (WQOW) – The two newest members of the state legislature could not wait until Monday to take the oath of office.
Jodi Emerson was voted in as the representative for the 91st Assembly District, while Jeff Smith won an election to become the state senator for the 31st District.
Friday, both took the oath of office in front of friends and family at the Eau Claire County Courthouse. Now that they are sworn in, both told News 18 they are ready to get to work.
“I look at this as that is what a representative should be doing we should be representing the people, so I’m really honored to do this, I look at this as a different way of doing the same job that I’ve always done which is part of the community and serving the community,” said Emerson.
“First thing I’m going to have to tackle is to get to know my colleagues and figure out how we are going to work together, we are a divided government, and I know that I’m going to need Republicans to help pass bills and they are going to need help from me to pass bills,” said Smith. “Hopefully we are going to get some really good things done like redistricting reform, protect our waters, protect our public schools — all the things that matter and that people elected us to do.”
Emerson and Smith will travel to Madison on Monday to watch Governor-elect Tony Evers be sworn in.
