Menomonie (WQOW) – On Friday, the University of Wisconsin-Stout Chamber Choir and Symphonic Singers will perform ‘Silent Night’, a holiday concert filled with songs that have historical roots. In addition, attendees can also hear letters and see artifacts commemorative to World War I.

“This is a Christmas concert, and I thought it would be interesting to also bring in a little bit of world history,” said Dr. Jerry Hui, assistant professor of music. “It turns out this year is the centennial for the end of World War I. So, it’s sort of a perfect time to bring some of this history under light.”

Hui said Menomonie and UW-Stout had a lot of connections to the war.

“It’s not everyday that you get the story with your music,” said senior Casey Tilkens, member of the choir. “To really relate it back to World War I, a big thing in the world’s history really, it’s pretty cool to see.”

“I like how we can also relate it to past students who have been in World War I. We’re reading a soldier’s diary that came from UW-Stout and I think that’s really cool that we are incorporating the world’s view of WWI, but then also our little town of Menomonie’s view on WWI,” said sophomore Brianna King, member of the choir.

Hui coordinated with the Dunn County Historical Society and University Archives to have artifacts from the war in the show, in an efforts to bring the history alive.

“The main point of having the artifacts is that the songs reach us emotionally, and the objects can really be a direct link to the people that used them,” said Melissa Kneeland, director of education at the Dunn County Historical Society. “So, I hope to combine the beauty of that ephemeral music and that emotional response, with the actual objects that were there.”

The concert will take place at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Menomonie at 7 p.m. on Friday. Tickets are $5 at the door. You can also purchase tickets at the student center (MSC), or online.
