Monday, he pleaded guilty to burglary with a dangerous weapon and fleeing officers in exchange for other charges in three separate cases being dropped.

Diesterhaft told investigators he was on the run from authorities in South Dakota and returned to Wisconsin to see his family before he killed himself. He admitted to stealing a rifle from a home, and then led authorities on a chase through Dunn County and Eau Claire County.

He said his goal was to force officers to shoot him because he didn’t want to go back to prison.

He was shot twice, but survived.

Diesterhaft will be sentenced in February. Based on the charges, he faces more than 18 years in prison.
