Eau Claire (WQOW)- Elementary students in Eau Claire celebrated Veterans Day early by sitting down with some local vets and sharing a meal Friday.

At Robbins Elementary, students were able to talk to veterans and thank them for their service.

The elementary school served a free meal to the veterans, and some of the veterans were related to the students, which made the day even more special.

Adeola Adenote, said she was excited to see all of the veterans Friday, and has been waiting for this day for a month now.

“Today we’re going to be singing to thank them,” Adenote said. “Some veterans have come to this school and they’re going to be our audience.”

In the audience was a 92-year-old World War II veteran named Don Mathrson.

Mathrson has been part of the community for some time, and even was a principal at the Jr. High School for 27 years.

He said this is his first time spending lunch with students for Veterans Day, but said he’s happy to be here.

“I think the chance for us to meet with them and for them to see a little bit what veterans are like is a great opportunity,” said Mathrson.

The school had a slide show of veterans playing throughout the lunch, and even had cake for veterans.
