Eau Claire (WQOW) – A local group is asking the county for support for a proposed $2 million project to honor our veterans.

The Eau Claire Veterans Foundation wants to use an area on Forest Street, north of Phoenix Park in downtown, to construct a veterans mall, which would be along the veterans trail. It would include statues, monuments and interactive educational stations honoring military veterans.

Organizers of the project told News 18, Eau Claire can be proud of what this park will accomplish.

“This veterans mall is about the people, not the weapons of war. It’s about the history of the Chippewa Valley and its veterans. The current veterans we have and the ones in the future, because it will be big enough to grow, and to service long into the future,” said Mark Beckfield of the Veterans Foundation.

Beckfield also said the area will provide a permanent spot for events, such as Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day, even a veterans convention.

If the Eau Claire County Board agrees to absorb $450,000 of the project, construction is planned for 2019, with possible completion in 2022.

Travel before Thanksgiving looks decent, but afterwards things could get messy.
