NEW: Driver who ran into Girl Scout troops was allegedly intoxicated

Chippewa County (WQOW) – The man who ran off the road and hit five people, including four Girl Scouts was allegedly intoxicated.

Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls is being held on the following charges:

  • Four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle
  • Four counts of homicide by negligent use of a vehicle
  • Five counts of hit and run.

According to police, Treu was driving northbound on Highway P near Lake Hallie when he went off the road hitting four Girl Scouts and a parent. Three of the Girl Scouts, students at Halmstad Elementary and Southview Elementary, were killed. The mother of a Southview student was also killed. Another child remains in the hospital. Police say Treu fled the scene and was later arrested.

Treu, a graduate of Chippewa Falls High School, is due to be in court on Monday morning. News 18 will be there and bring you updated information.
