Eau Claire (WQOW) — A UW-Eau Claire professor has earned recognition from the statewide UW System for her excellence.

Jan Larson, chair of UWEC’s Communication and Journalism department, was named one of the UW System’s 2018 Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award. The award recognizes achievements of equity and inclusion of people of color.

Larson said she believes her involvement with immersion journalism, such as the annual civil rights pilgrimage her Civil Conversations class takes, could have contributed to the award. She hopes the recognition helps improve the program for her student.

“When students are this immersed in a project, it changes how they think about their work and the role that they play,” Larson said. “My goal is for my students to understand journalism really is about democracy.”

Larson also said this award will only push her to keep doing the work she loves to do.

She will be honored at a UW System event on November 8.
