Candidates on the ballot: “Birthright Citizenship”

Madison (WKOW) – With President Donald Trump contemplating whether to eliminate birthright citizenship so close to the midterms, it’s cornering candidates on the ballot to weigh in.

Providing citizenship is part of the U.S. Constitution, which the 14th Amendment grants to anyone born in the county. But even top Republicans said it’s not possible to do through an executive order.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said during a radio interview President Trump cannot prevent birthright citizenship by executive order and he’s a “firm believer of following the Constitution.”

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Leah Vukmir, who’s a daughter of Greek immigrants, said she supports providing citizenship, but only for those who are legally in the country.

“Illegal immigrants are taking advantage of America’s generosity and I applaud President Trump’s courageous leadership to fix our immigration crisis,” said Vukmir.

Democratic candidates oppose it. Candidate for governor Tony Evers and Senator Tammy Baldwin don’t support the President’s call. Baldwin said she’d rather see a broader fix to the immigration system.

“I think what we really need to do is fix our broken immigration system and strengthen our border through comprehensive immigration reform,” said Baldwin.

Former Vice President Joe Biden cited the president’s administration while in Madison on his stance towards illegal immigrants.

“Calling refugees animals, propping up immigrants and African Americans as a source of your problem if you have a problem, ripping infants and children from their mothers at the border,” said Biden.

As for Governor Walker, his campaign is being silent on the issue right now but when he was running for president in 2015 he appeared to be open to the idea of ending birthright citizenship when a reporter asked him. Days later he flipped saying he had no position.
