Cornell man faces charges after alleging punching a child in the face

Chippewa County (WQOW) – A Cornell man is facing child abuse charges for allegedly punching a child in the face.

David E. Markham, 52, faces one count of child abuse and one count of disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint, the incident happened on September 30. The victim said he sent a text message to his mother from Markham’s cell phone saying he had not gotten to eat all day and was hungry.

The child said Markham confronted him about sending the messages and told the child not to disrespect him. The child said Markham asked him if he understood, and when the child did not respond Markham punched him with a closed fist on the left side of the face near his eye.

Investigators say the child had a red mark under his left eye that looked like a cut. His face also had red spots that looked like broken blood vessels.

When investigators went through Markham’s phone, they found multiple messages Markham sent about losing his patience and temper due to new medications.

Markham is in court on November 13. If convicted on all the charges, he faces more than six years behind bars.
