Eau Claire (WQOW)- An Eau Claire native running for Wisconsin State Treasurer hopes to alleviate student loan debt.
Sarah Godlewski made a stop Tuesday at UW-Eau Claire to talk with students about how she can make a difference.
Godlewski said on average, students leave college with a $30,000 debt, and nearly one million Wisconsinites struggle with student loan debt. She said she has a plan to help them.
“As state treasurer I am the financial trustee to four trust funds worth over $1.2 billion, and you have investment authority to determine how exactly those funds will be invested,” Godlewski said. “We will literally look at student loan debt as an investment so we will buy that high interest student loan debt at like a nine-percent rate and then refinance it at a four-percent rate. but we’re still making a return on the trust fund.”
Godlewski said it’s important for her to find a solution to student loan debt because it affects so many people in Wisconsin.
Godlewski is running against Republican candidate Travis Hartwig.
