Candidate for state treasurer hopes to solve student loan debt issues

Eau Claire (WQOW)- An Eau Claire native running for Wisconsin State Treasurer hopes to alleviate student loan debt.

Sarah Godlewski made a stop Tuesday at UW-Eau Claire to talk with students about how she can make a difference.

Godlewski said on average, students leave college with a $30,000 debt, and nearly one million Wisconsinites struggle with student loan debt. She said she has a plan to help them.

“As state treasurer I am the financial trustee to four trust funds worth over $1.2 billion, and you have investment authority to determine how exactly those funds will be invested,”¬†Godlewski said. “We will literally look at student loan debt as an investment so we will buy that high interest student loan debt at like a nine-percent rate and then refinance it at a four-percent rate. but we’re still making a return on the trust fund.”

Godlewski said it’s important for her to find a solution to student loan debt because it affects so many people in Wisconsin.

Godlewski is running against Republican candidate Travis Hartwig.
