Eau Claire (WQOW) – An Eau Claire church scammed out of $25,000 shared its story with News 18, hoping the message will save others.

Pastor Dave Irgens of Saving Grace Lutheran Church said a volunteer with the church was contacted personally and was told he was owed money by a computer business. They said if they could have access to his computer, they’d send him money.

Instead, they schemed to drain a linked church account out of $25,000.

Pastor Irgens said it’s a shame anyone would want to take advantage of a church.

A police report has been filed and the church is hoping insurance will cover the loss. If not, they may have to hold a fundraising event.

More importantly, Pastor Irgens wants to share this story so others in the community don’t fall for the same scam.

Eau Claire police say frauds like this are common. They remind everyone not to give out personal information over the phone, computer or to someone you do not know. They say if it seems too good to be true, it is likely a scam.

Weather Outlook: Finally! More sunshine this weekend

The fog and clouds lifted late Friday morning, and that meant the sun finally shined brightly for much of the day. While it doesn’t have a lot of power this time of year given we’re only a week away from the winter solstice, it still helped warm us into the mid 30s.
