Furry friends were blessed at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Most pet owners can agree that their dogs and cats are more than just pets, they’re more like family.

HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s Hospitals held their annual ‘Blessing of the Animals’ event Sunday. 30 dogs, one cat, and one guinea pig waited to receive their blessing on Sunday.

Sommer Miller, who works at the HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, stopped by to have her dogs Kaiju and Kahleesi blessed.

“Saint Francis is a lover of animals and a big lover in nature, so it’s just a nice opportunity to share our healing ministry with our pets,” said Miller.

Miller is referring to the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi. The Sacred Heart’s chaplain, Father John Schultz said Saint Francis’ love for animals started with a wolf.

“Saint Francis, we are told, loved animals. There is a story, there was a wild wolf, and the wolf was coming into town and was killing the people’s animals and also frankly hurting some people, and so Saint Francis came and talked to the wolf and tamed the wolf, and they became friends, as the story goes,” said Schultz.

Schultz said he looks forward to blessing animals every year.
