20 German students learning at North High School

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Since early September, 20 students and two teachers from a high school in Germany have been staying with Eau Claire North High School students learning German.

It is part of North’s G.A.P.P (German American Partnership Program) exchange program. The North students’ families will host their son’s or daughter’s German partner student for two to three weeks.

The students took part in day trips and other educational activities, like the Eagle Center, and a boat trip to Lake Pepin.

“America is such a big country and such a wonderful country, that it really does not really matter how long you are here you will always discover something new, and I think that is absolutely worth it,” said Jan Giemsa, German exchange student.

Sabrina Lutter, another German exchange student, said she really enjoyed North’s sports because they don’t have those programs at home.

“All those sports teams, and then the team spirit, everyone on the team gets along so will try to bring that back to Germany with me, like the team spirit and cheering on your companions,” Lutter said.

Sixty Wisconsin high schools participate in the G.A.P.P program. News 18 asked Jan Giemsa and Sabrina Lutter what they were most impressed by in Eau Claire, and they said Woodman’s Market.

The German students are from the city of Neumarkt in the state of Bavaria, about 85 miles north of Munich.

The student’s last day visiting Eau Claire will be September 24.
