Former Uniroyal employees plan reunion on Saturday

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Twenty-six years after their last day on the job together, former Uniroyal employees are getting together to reminisce.

Darrel Wekkin worked for Uniroyal for 27 years and said while the plant was still running every year they had a Labor Day picnic.

Wekkin said once the plant closed they had a reunion every five years. Now that they’re all getting older, they’ve decided to have a reunion every year.

He said everybody who worked there got to try all kinds of different jobs, and even if they didn’t love the task, they loved the people around them.

“Most of us considered the job we had as a way of life, and really and truthfully, you got to know the people really well, and you became interested in what they do as well as they became interested in what you do and it’s just a big following kind of camaraderie,” Wekkin said.

Wekkin said anyone who worked for the plant, and their families, are welcome to come to the reunion Saturday at Happy Hollow in Altoona from 1 to 5 p.m.
