Chippewa Valley apple orchards ready for picking

Eau Claire (WQOW)– It was a busy day at Ferguson’s Orchards. Although the farm has been open since the end of August, it’s getting ready for more foot traffic.

“Well, we’re out picking apples right now like every day and just making sure everything is ready for people to come,” said Andy Ferguson, the co-owner of the farm.

Friday is the first day of the season to start picking.

“Sweetango which is really popular early kind of apple, and we still have a lot of those in our stores so that’s a big favorite too,” Ferguson said. “It really doesn’t start ramping up until the Honeycrisp is ready.”

“Like we always say with Honeycrisp, the redder the better, so we’ll be out helping people find the perfect apple,” Ferguson said.

“The weather we’re having right now is perfect for apples as we get into the late season here,” Ferguson said. “Apples really like a cool night, which last night we were into the 40s, so this is perfect. Then to top it off with a bright nice sunny days to help the apples turn nice and bright red and we really couldn’t ask for anything better.”

The farm has almost 40 different varieties, so if Honeycrisp isn’t the apple of your eye, there are a lot of fan favorites to choose from.

“We have a few that are really kind of core, pardon the pun, varieties which are Honeycrisp, Pazazz, Sweetango and Riverbelle,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson said those apples will be in full swing in a few weeks.

“So we go right from one into the other and just kind of continue the eating experience all through fall with a little variety,” Ferguson said.
