Marshfield (WAOW) – A fire destroyed a Marshfield church Sunday afternoon. The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m at Wesley United Methodist Church. Crews spent hours battling the blaze, but the building was completely destroyed.
“My son ran in said the church was on fire,” said Marshfield resident Amanda Rae Hatala. “I go running outside, by the time I get outside the bottom right window is already busted out and there were flame and smoke shooting out of it.”
Church leaders said the fire started about an hour after service and Sunday school finished up. No one was inside at the time. Dozens of neighbors, residents and church goers watched the fire and smoke in awe and heartbreak.
“It’s hard, it’s sad but we trust in the lord,” said Reverend Lourdes Magalhaes.
The building is nearly 137 years old and a staple in the community.
“It’s history that we are losing, but my, the church members they are strong, and we will get through it,” said Magalhaes.
While the building may be destroyed, church leaders said they’re just grateful no one was hurt.
Officials said are still investigating the cause of the fire.
