Menomonie historian John Russell dies

Menomonie (WQOW) – A well-known Chippewa Valley photographer and historian, John Russell, passed away Thursday morning, according to the Dunn County Historical Society. Russell operated a photography studio in Menomonie for many years and was curator emeritus of the historical society.

He was well-known for writing a regular newspaper column, “Scenes of Yesteryear” in the Dunn County News.

Russell was featured in a story that aired on WQOW in August of 2015 about his role as a photographer and cameraman for the U.S. Navy during World War II. You can watch that story below.

Russell was also an accomplished artist, who drew illustrations for various publications.

No funeral arrangements have been announced yet.
