Jeff Smith wins Democratic nomination in Senate District 31

(WQOW) – A unique opening in the 31st Senate District which is wide open after Kathleen Vinehout’s run for governor.

The district covers parts of nine counties – including Eau Claire, Dunn, Jackson and Trempealeau.

Three Democrats were on the ballot and Jeff Smith is the winner.

"I know what it’s like on both sides of this: winning and losing. It’s really hard and I know it’s really difficult, but it means in the end that we’ll all have to come together the next day and the next week and continue to work for the betterment of our district and our state," Smith said.

Smith served two terms as a state rep in the 93rd District. He is organizer for Citizen Action Organizing Coop of western Wisconsin.

He will go on to face Republican Mel Pittman and Green Party candidate Aaron Camacho.
