40 Latinos in Congress, 3 races still undecided

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Latinos serving in Congress will rise to at least 40 in the new year, and that figure most likely will increase when three undecided races are called.

Thirty-two out of 44 Latino Democratic candidates won election in Tuesday’s contests, including New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez. He who won a third term.

Among Republicans, six out of 15 Latino candidates claimed victory, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who beat back a tough challenge from Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke.

In New Mexico, Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan (loo-HAHN’) Grisham was elected governor. She defeated Republican Rep. Steve Pearce.

Lujan Grisham will become the nation’s second elected Latina governor and the nation’s first Latina Democratic governor.
