Washington doctor uses experience to fuel US House campaign

ISSAQUAH, Wash. (AP) — Dr. Kim Schrier is framing her congressional candidacy around health care issues with personal anecdotes as a patient, parent and pediatrician.

She’s a Democrat running for an open U.S. House seat in Washington state. She’s hoping the popularity of aspects of former President Barack Obama’s health care law and support for improving access to medical care drives her to victory.

Republicans have rolled out ads slamming her plan to expand Medicare as a “scheme” that “could double taxes” as they try to keep the seat.

Schrier is among four physicans running for the House who could become the first Democrat female doctor in Congress.

Schrier’s Republican opponent, Dino Rossi, supports future efforts to repeal Obama’s health law, suggesting instead a “high risk” insurance pool for people with pre-existing conditions.
