House seat suddenly in play after Trump backer’s indictment

HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s most conservative congressional district is unexpectedly in play as Republican incumbent Chris Collins fights insider trading charges while seeking re-election.

Collins was among the first members of Congress to endorse President Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

Now Republican leaders in the western New York district Trump overwhelmingly won are counting on party and presidential loyalty for a Collins win next month.

His Democratic challenger, Nate McMurray, says his volunteers and donations surged after Collins was charged in August.

Collins is accused of leaking information about a biopharmaceutical company to his son that allowed him and others to avoid nearly $800,000 in stock losses. The most serious charge carries a potential 20-year prison term.
