Pelosi unveils plans to establish new House diversity office

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi wants to establish a new House diversity office to hire employees from different backgrounds to Capitol Hill.

That’s according to a letter Pelosi sent to colleagues Thursday that was obtained by The Associated Press.

Pelosi says Democrats “take great pride” in a House majority that she says will be more than 60 percent women, minorities and LGBTQ representatives.

The House Diversity Initiative calls for creating a permanent House office with staff to help recruit and retain diverse employees. It would be voted on at the start of the new Congress.

Pelosi is shoring up support for House speaker and tapping into an issue that’s a priority for the Congressional Black Caucus and others. House Democrats won the election with more female and minority candidates.
