Rural Virginia county hopes, after years, to reopen hospital

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — For most of this year, Virginia’s sprawling, westernmost county appeared to be on track for an accomplishment that would be a rarity for a rural community anywhere in the country: Its only hospital was set to reopen after closing five years ago.

But the startup company expected to run the facility in Lee County has run into challenges that officials say have thrown the plan into question at the last minute.

It’s a story that illustrates the herculean task of trying to revive a shuttered rural hospital and the harsh realities of access to health care in many parts of America.

Local officials say the closure has been devastating to the already struggling county, resulting in far longer travel times for ill patients and strains on emergency responders and the local economy.
