The Latest: Felony filed against Oklahoma student in assault

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Latest on the alleged assault of a teenager at an Oklahoma high school (all times local):

4:40 p.m.

Prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old Oklahoma high school student with assault and battery for allegedly using a broom handle to assault another student.

Court records indicate the felony was filed Friday against Dawson Michael McClain of Bethany. Charges have not been filed against three juveniles also accused of being involved in the alleged assault.

The incident occurred on Sept. 28 in the football locker room at Putnam City West High School. The charging document says three students held the 14-year-old boy “with intent to do bodily harm,” while a fourth student penetrated him with a broom handle.

In a similar case last year in Bixby, Oklahoma, four ex-high school football players have pleaded not guilty to second-degree rape by instrumentation.

A 2017 Associated Press investigation examining sexual violence among students found teammate-on-teammate assaults occurred in all types of sports.

An attorney for a suspended Oklahoma City high school football coach says his client knew nothing about the alleged assault of a teenage boy by four other players in a locker room.

The Oklahoman reports Corey Russell was placed on leave following the Sept. 28 attack at Putnam City West High School.

A campus police report alleges three students held the boy while a fourth penetrated him with a broom handle. Attorney Joe White says Russell wasn’t in the locker room when it happened.

The teens claimed it’s a team tradition. Criminal charges are being considered.

White says Russell took over the football program last year and “would never tolerate this.”
