ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ohio State has made it through two games just fine without Urban Meyer. Now the No. 4 Buckeyes face their toughest test on the last Saturday before their suspended coach can return to the sideline. They face No. 15 TCU and coach Gary Patterson’s 4-2-5 defense. TCU and Ohio State are among only five teams that have finished in the Top 10 in the final AP poll at least three times in the past four years. The Frogs played in the Big 12 championship game last season.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — The weather is sunny with mild breezes for the only major conference football game being played today in the Carolinas and Virginia. No. 2 Clemson is hosting Georgia Southern while other parts of the region deal with heavy rain and flooding from former Hurricane Florence. Every other major school in the three-state region called off or relocated games earlier in the week in anticipation of the storm, once a Category 4 hurricane.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee has handed out more than 1,000 free tickets for its game with UTEP to hurricane evacuees from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Volunteers athletic director Phillip Fulmer had announced earlier in the week that evacuees would get free tickets as long as they provided IDs showing they’re from counties under evacuation orders.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have cut veteran receiver Jeremy Kerley in a surprise move. Kerley was released today so the Bills could sign defensive tackle Robert Thomas off their practice squad. Kerley is an eight-year veteran who signed a one-year deal with Buffalo in free agency in April. Buffalo is down to five receivers at a position that lacks proven depth behind starter Kelvin Benjamin.
ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Doubles specialist Mike Bryan’s decision to come out of Davis Cup retirement has given the United States a much-needed lift. Bryan teamed with Ryan Harrison for the first time and helped the U.S. outlast Croatia in a match that took nearly five hours. Today’s victory cut Croatia’s lead to 2-1 in their semifinal.
