Nats, Mets try to stay alive…Dodgers and Cardinals battle for wild card

ATLANTA (AP) — The Nationals try to keep their slim postseason hopes alive when they face NL East-leading Atlanta this afternoon. The Braves won their season-best sixth straight game last night with a 10-5 victory over the Nationals and stayed 7½ games ahead of second-place Philadelphia. They can win their first division title since 2013 with any combination of nine Atlanta victories or Phillies’ losses. Third-place Washington can be eliminated from the division race by any combination of six Atlanta wins or Washington losses.

BOSTON (AP) — The Mets try to stave off elimination as they visit the Red Sox, the only team in baseball to have already secured a playoff berth. The Mets beat the Red Sox 8-0 last night, snapping a four-game winning streak. The Mets have won 25 of their last 40 games and are technically still alive in the NL East but could be eliminated as early as this weekend. Boston’s magic number to clinch its third straight division title is six.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Dodgers and the Cardinals meet again in St. Louis this afternoon. Los Angeles pulled even with the Cardinals in the NL wild-card race with a 3-0 win last night and moved within one-half game of first-place Colorado in the NL West. Veteran lefty Rich Hill starts for L.A. against Cardinals right-hander John Gant.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Cubs send ace Jon Lester to the mound when they host Cincinnati this afternoon. Lester lost his last start on Monday to Milwaukee, exiting after 5 2/3 innings with lower back tightness. Left-hander Cody Reed starts for the Reds. NL Central-leading Chicago beat the Reds 3-2 last night to stay 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Milwaukee.

NEW YORK (AP) — Injured Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is set to throw a bullpen session, then will pitch a simulated game on Monday. If all goes well, he could be activated in the middle of next week. The New York lefty hasn’t pitched in a game since Aug. 21 because of left knee tendinitis.
