MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service says victims of Hurricane Florence will get a grace period before having to file some tax returns and payments. The IRS said Saturday it’s offering the relief in parts of North Carolina and other regions designated a disaster area by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Upcoming September deadlines for certain individual and business tax filings and payments will be postponed until Jan. 31 next year.

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) — A rural town, battered by the collapse of its blue-collar economy and then by Hurricane Matthew, might also bear the brunt of Florence. Residents of Lumberton, North Carolina, some of them still rebuilding after the devastating 2016 flood, are watching the rain and wondering how much more their community can take. Many people never returned after Matthew, and some who did question if they could bear to do so again.

LAREDO, Texas (AP) — Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz is describing the U.S. Border Patrol agent suspected of killing four prostitutes as a “serial killer.” Alaniz says his office plans to charge Ortiz with four counts of murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping. Authorities say one woman Ortiz had abducted escaped early Saturday morning and she was able to alert authorities.

WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) — Police say a man has died after being attacked by a shark off a beach on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley says the 26-year-old man from Revere succumbed to his injuries following the attack in the waters off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at around noon. Life-saving measures were attempted on the beach before the man was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses say he was boogie boarding when he was attacked.

TUGUEGARAO, Philippines (AP) — Typhoon Mangkhut has lashed the northern Philippines with destructive winds and heavy rain that set off landslides and destroyed homes, leaving at least 12 people dead. The most ferocious typhoon to hit the Philippines this year slammed ashore before dawn on the northeastern tip of Luzon island, a breadbasket that is also a region of flood-prone rice plains and mountain provinces with a history of deadly landslides. The storm is now taking aim at Hong Kong and other parts of southern China.
