ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — No. 4 Ohio State’s last Saturday without Urban Meyer on the sideline will be against No. 15 TCU. It will be the toughest test for the Buckeyes during their coach’s three-game suspension. TCU hasn’t faced a disruptive defensive front like Ohio State. But the Buckeyes and their new starting quarterback also haven’t been challenged as they will be by TCU’s defense. Ohio State is back in the stadium where it won the national title four seasons ago, and finished last year winning the Cotton Bowl.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State practiced at a quicker pace this week to prepare for what could be the fastest offense it’ll have to defend all season. That’s how Kent State will attack the No. 11 Nittany Lions (2-0) when they visit Beaver Stadium on Saturday. The Golden Flashes (1-1) are led by coach Sean Lewis, whose Syracuse offense ran plenty and beat then-No. 2 Clemson.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The offense is nearly back to full strength at No. 6 Wisconsin, where receiver Danny Davis is coming back from suspension on Saturday against BYU. Starting tight end Zander Neuville also returned last week against BYU, meaning quarterback Alex Hornibrook has two more targets in the passing game. The Cougars’ biggest challenge will be on the ground, where they must stop the nation’s leading rusher, Jonathan Taylor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan generated momentum it desperately needed last week. The Wolverines were successful in all phases during a 49-3 win over Western Michigan following a sputtering, seven-point loss at Notre Dame. They seem set up for another confidence-boosting victory. No. 19 Michigan is expected to beat SMU by more than seven touchdowns at home. The Mustangs under first-year coach Sonny Dykes have been beaten by a combined score of 88-35 in their first two games against No. 16 TCU and North Texas.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For a player with less than two full seasons of college experience, Antoine Winfield Jr. has developed into quite the star. His game-saving interception in the last game was the highlight of Minnesota’s win over Fresno State. The Gophers host Miami of Ohio this weekend. They badly missed Winfield last fall, after a hamstring injury limited him to four games. Now he’s the leader of a young secondary, quickly building an All-Big Ten resume and following the path of his NFL star father.
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern hopes to avoid back-to-back losses when the Wildcats host Akron on Saturday. A 21-7 loss to Duke stopped their nine-game streak. Akron opened its seventh season under Terry Bowden a week later than expected with a 41-7 romp over Morgan State. The Zips were scheduled to visit Nebraska the previous week but the game was called off because of lightning.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland opens its home schedule this weekend against Temple looking to remain unbeaten under interim football coach Matt Canada. The Terrapins have won two straight games to start the season and averaging 486 yards a game. Temple is winless after losing two close games at home.
UNDATED (AP) — Purdue coach Jeff Brohm spent this week making corrections and rebuilding his team’s confidence. He’s about to find out if it solves the Boilermakers ills. They are suddenly trying to get their season and hopes back on track following two straight losses. They host SEC East team Missouri on Saturday. The Tigers are 2-0 behind talented quarterback Drew Lock.
