UNDATED (AP) — The Southeastern Conference’s West Division commands the spotlight Saturday. Top-ranked Alabama opens league play at Mississippi and No. 7 Auburn hosts No. 12 LSU. Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has a chance to become a serious Heisman Trophy contender when the Buckeyes play TCU in Arlington, Texas. New UCLA coach Chip Kelly is still looking for his first win when the Bruins play Fresno State.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s new-look secondary is facing its biggest challenge yet. So, however, are the Mississippi receivers. The top-ranked Crimson Tide’s still inexperienced defensive backs are tasked with containing Rebels’ quarterback Jordan Ta’amu along with A.J. Brown and his fellow receivers in Oxford, Mississippi.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Special teams figured prominently the last two times LSU and Auburn met. Now 12th-ranked LSU is hoping noticeable improvements in its kicking game can tip the balance in its favor at No. 7 Auburn on Saturday. New place kicker Cole Tracy has booted two field goals of 50 yards or more and has yet to miss any of his five attempts. Avery Atkins has recorded touchbacks on 11 of 13 kickoffs. And former baseball pro Zach Von Rosenberg is averaging 45.1 yards on nine punts.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas has not yet shed its disappointing habit of blowing late leads. Coach Bret Bielema lost 34 games with the Razorbacks before he was let go after last season and 13 of those losses included a blown lead in the fourth quarter. New coach Chad Morris says it is his job to make sure Arkansas can close games out strongly, but his team is coming off a loss at Colorado State that included a blown lead. Arkansas faces North Texas on Saturday.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Terry Wilson enters his third game with Kentucky having achieved a special place among Wildcats fans: He is the quarterback who finally snapped “The Streak” against Florida. The next step for Wilson is to consistently play well by smoothing out the rough edges in his game. He has accounted for more turnovers (five) than touchdowns (three), but the TDs came in Kentucky’s 27-16 upset of the then-25th-ranked Gators that ended Kentucky’s 31-game losing streak to Florida.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The quarterback competition that dominated Tennessee’s preseason camp appears settled for now with Jarrett Guarantano starting the first two football games. It’s the rest of the offense that is filled with uncertainty. Tennessee has experimented with various options at running back and on the offensive line. That pattern likely will continue Saturday when Tennessee hosts winless UTEP.
UNDATED (AP) — Colgate football coach Dan Hunt was thinking about other people when the Raiders’ scheduled game at Furman was canceled because of Hurricane Florence. The team released its hotel rooms and donated the scheduled team meals.
