ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — No. 4 Ohio State’s last Saturday without Urban Meyer on the sideline will be against No. 15 TCU. It will be the toughest test for the Buckeyes during their coach’s three-game suspension. TCU hasn’t faced a disruptive defensive front like Ohio State. But the Buckeyes and their new starting quarterback also haven’t been challenged as they will be by TCU’s defense. Ohio State is back in the stadium where it won the national title four seasons ago, and finished last year winning the Cotton Bowl.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The offense is nearly back to full strength at No. 6 Wisconsin, where receiver Danny Davis is coming back from suspension on Saturday against BYU. Starting tight end Zander Neuville also returned last week against BYU, meaning quarterback Alex Hornibrook has two more targets in the passing game. The Cougars’ biggest challenge will be on the ground, where they must stop the nation’s leading rusher, Jonathan Taylor
UNDATED (AP) — The Southeastern Conference’s West Division commands the spotlight Saturday. Top-ranked Alabama opens league play at Mississippi and No. 7 Auburn hosts No. 12 LSU. Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has a chance to become a serious Heisman Trophy contender when the Buckeyes play TCU in Arlington, Texas. New UCLA coach Chip Kelly is still looking for his first win when the Bruins play Fresno State.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan generated momentum it desperately needed last week. The Wolverines were successful in all phases during a 49-3 win over Western Michigan following a sputtering, seven-point loss at Notre Dame. They seem set up for another confidence-boosting victory. No. 19 Michigan is expected to beat SMU by more than seven touchdowns at home. The Mustangs under first-year coach Sonny Dykes have been beaten by a combined score of 88-35 in their first two games against No. 16 TCU and North Texas.
UNDATED (AP) — As much as Big Ten fans and players look forward to marquee matchups early in the season, big nonconference games present a risk for any program with national title aspirations. If No. 25 Michigan State wants to be in the playoff hunt, its margin for error is slim after a loss at Arizona State. The same is true for No. 19 Michigan, which dropped its opener at Notre Dame. This week, the pressure is on No. 4 Ohio State, which faces a tough test against No. 15 TCU.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Dwayne Haskins Jr. is getting his chance to run Ohio State’s offense after waiting in the wings for two seasons. After a redshirt season and then sitting as a backup to J.T. Barrett, Haskins is running the show for the No. 4 Buckeyes and is everything they expected. He’s lit up the scoreboard in the first two games, throwing five touchdown passes in his debut and four more last week.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 4 Ohio State is averaging 650 yards and 64.5 points through two games. The Buckeyes expect to get a big challenge from 15th-ranked TCU’s traditionally strong defense. Indiana’s veteran offensive line will be tested by a Ball State defense that had four sacks in a loss to Notre Dame. Purdue is a touchdown underdog at home against Missouri. Rutgers freshman quarterback Arthur Sitkowski is coming off a shoulder injury and merits watching when the Scarlet Knights play at Kansas.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The circumstances for Nebraska are far from ideal as it eyes its first road game under new coach Scott Frost next week at Michigan. The Cornhuskers went late into this week not knowing the status of true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, making their Saturday game against Troy a little trickier. If Martinez can’t play, sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch will make his first start.
