RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence has canceled his planned trip to Georgia on Thursday because of the updated track of Hurricane Florence. The vice president’s office says Pence will remain in Washington to monitor the federal response to the hurricane. Pence had been scheduled to hold a campaign event for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp and stop by an American Red Cross disaster field supply center in Atlanta and address employees at the Delta TechOps facility.
NEW YORK (AP) — A video of Harvey Weinstein shows him boldly propositioning a woman who later accused him of rape and repeatedly touching her and stroking her arm and back during what was supposed to have been a business meeting. Sky News aired video Wednesday showing Weinstein making sexual advances on Melissa Thompson in his office in 2011. Thompson says Weinstein later raped her. Weinstein’s lawyer says the video just shows casual flirting.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh says he would have shaken the hand of a man whose daughter was killed in a Florida high school shooting if he had known who the man was. A photo of Kavanaugh appearing to refuse to shake Fred Guttenberg’s outstretched hand last week went viral. Kavanaugh told the Senate Judiciary Committee he assumed the man who approached him was a protester. Kavanagh’s explanation was part of a 263-page response late Wednesday to some 1,287 written questions from senators.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Allan Fung has won the Republican nomination for Rhode Island governor. The win gives Fung, the mayor of Cranston, a second chance at the office he failed to win four years ago in a contest against Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo. Fung beat Patricia Morgan, a state lawmaker. Fung has given few interviews, held no press conferences and said little about his views on issues during the race.
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian news reports say a member of the Russian punk protest group Pussy Riot who ran onto the field in the World Cup final is hospitalized for what could be poisoning. Ekho Moskvy radio and online news portal Meduza said Pyotr Verzilov was in grave condition Wednesday. They quoted fellow Pussy Riot member Veronika Nikulshina saying Verzilov was losing his eyesight and ability to speak. Nikulshina says he is in a Moscow hospital’s toxicology unit, indicating a suspected poisoning.
