Here is the latest Big Ten Conference sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State came into the season with high expectations and a wealth of returning starters, but the 25th-ranked Spartans have looked eminently beatable so far. After a closer-than-expected win over Utah State, Michigan State lost at Arizona State last weekend on a game-ending field goal.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Maryland has started what the Terrapins interim coach describes as a “unique” season unbeaten and is garnering votes in the Top 25 poll while playing for fallen teammate Jordan McNair and without head coach DJ Durkin. After opening with an upset of then-No. 23 Texas and using a big second half to beat Bowling Green 45-14 last week, the Terrapins open their home schedule Saturday against winless Temple.

UNDATED (AP) — It’s not unusual to see Iowa’s defense ahead of its offense in the middle of September. But the difference between those two units has likely never been starker. Through two games, Iowa has one of the best defense in America and one of the worst offenses. Coach Kirk Ferentz says there is always something to work out. The Hawkeyes host Northern Iowa on Saturday.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A judge has ordered Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus to stand trial on charges that he sexually assaulted two drunken women this spring. Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky on Tuesday rejected a motion from his attorneys to dismiss one of the counts alleging that the women weren’t as impaired as investigators say. Prosecutors charged Cephus in August with second- and third-degree sexual assault, which are both felonies.
