Jets, Rams get road wins…Brewers nip Cubs…Rockies rip DBacks…Braves pad lead…Astros win

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams won last night’s NFL games. Sam Darnold threw a pick-6 on his first NFL passing attempt, but he also finished 16 of 21 for 198 yards and two touchdowns as the Jets crushed the Detroit Lions, 48-17. Jared Goff threw two touchdown passes and newcomer Marcus Peters returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown as the Rams pulled away in a 33-13 win over the Raiders in Oakland.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs’ lead in the NL Central is down to one game over Milwaukee after Mike Moustakas (moos-TAH’-kahs) scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch by Carl Edwards in the sixth inning of the Brewers’ 3-2 victory at Wrigley Field. Lorenzo Cain was 4-for-5 with one run scored, and Moustakas scored twice while going 2-for-3. Wade Miley combined with three relievers on a five-hitter, with Josh Hader striking out all six batters he faced.

UNDATED (AP) — Colorado’s 13-2 rout of Arizona puts the Rockies 1 ½ games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, with the Diamondbacks now 3 ½ games back. Trevor Story belted a three-run homer while Colorado scored six in the fifth inning, and German (hur-MAHN’) Marquez struck out 11 over seven frames. Scooter Gennett was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored as the Reds thumped the Dodgers, 10-6.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Atlanta’s 4-1 win at San Francisco gives the NL East-leading Braves a five-game edge over Philadelphia. Sean Newcomb struck out eight and limited the Giants to one run and three hits over six innings. Ozzie Albies tripled home a run and Kurt Suzuki was 3-for-3 with an RBI to support Newcomb’s 12th victory.

DETROIT (AP) — Justin Verlander received a pair of ovations in his return to Detroit before allowing two runs over seven innings of Houston’s 3-2 victory against the Tigers. Francisco Liriano’s wild pitch and an error by shortstop Ronny Rodriguez allowed the Astros to score three unearned runs in the third. The win gives the AL West-leading Astros a three-game lead over Oakland.
