ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh quieted his critics, for now, with a dominant 49-3 win over Western Michigan. The 19th-ranked Wolverines have a chance for another big win this Saturday against winless Southern Methodist. Michigan was criticized by fans, the media and former receiver Braylon Edwards after a season-opening loss to Notre Dame.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Receiver Danny Davis is expected to play on Saturday for No. 6 Wisconsin against BYU after completing a two-game suspension. Coach Paul Chryst says Davis has been cleared to play. His roommate was suspended indefinitely and is facing felony charges of sexual assault. Davis caught 26 passes for 418 yards and five touchdowns last year
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — No. 4 Ohio State will get a better opportunity to gauge its potential this week against No. 15 TCU. The Buckeyes have been offensively prolific in the first two weeks, ranking second nationally with 650 yards per game. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. has thrown for 546 yards with nine touchdowns. Acting coach Ryan Day says TCU’s experienced defense will pose a stiff challenge.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost says quarterback Adrian Martinez is day-to-day with a right knee injury and that it might not be known until game time whether he’ll be able to play against Troy on Saturday. Martinez was injured in the 33-28 loss to Colorado. Frost says video of the play raised suspicions that a Colorado defender intentionally hurt the knee after Martinez went down. Video was sent to the Big Ten and Pac-12 offices for review.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota running back Rodney Smith will miss the remainder of the season because of an injury to his left knee. Smith was hurt on the third play of the game against Fresno State at the end of an 11-yard gain on a screen pass. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck says the team will request a medical redshirt and a sixth year of eligibility for 2019 for Smith. He is seventh in program history with 2,959 career rushing yards. The Gophers host Miami (Ohio) this weekend.
UNDATED (AP) — Purdue coach Jeff Brohm has seen enough silly penalties to last him the entire season. Now, after watching flags cost the Boilermakers potential wins in each of their first two games, he is imposing new punishments. He says any player who gets a 15-yard penalty is “out of the game.” Purdue faces Missouri this weekend.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana coach Tom Allen grew weary of all those close calls last season, so he challenged his team to find a finishing touch. On Saturday, Allen witnessed the payoff when the Hoosiers overcame a scoreless second half, heavy rain and a late pass interference penalty to hang on for a 20-16 victory over Virginia that could prove crucial to their bowl hopes. Indiana hosts Ball State on Saturday.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers freshman quarterback Art Sitkowski is feeling better and coach Chris Ash expects him to play this Saturday against Kansas. Sitkowski hurt his right shoulder in Saturday’s 52-3 loss at No. 4 Ohio State when sacked by Nick Bosa in the waning seconds of the first half.
