Serena Williams eyes record-tying title…Cavs sign Nwaba…NASCAR qualifying washed out

NEW YORK (AP) — A year after giving birth, Serena Williams tries for her seventh U.S. Open title and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title. She faces first-time finalist Naomi Osaka of Japan. The 20-year-old Osaka will try to become the youngest women’s champion at the U.S. Open since Maria Sharapova was 19 in 2006.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers have made another move in their post-LeBron James makeover, signing free-agent guard David Nwaba to a one-year contract. The deal is for the veteran’s minimum of $1.5 million. The 25-year-old Nwaba played for Chicago last season, averaging 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds in 70 games. The 6-foot-4 guard made 21 starts.

BOSTON (AP) — Police in Boston say Celtics guard Jabari Bird is facing several charges following a domestic incident that left a person injured. Police said complaints would be sought against Bird for assault and battery, strangulation and kidnapping. Bird, a second-round draft choice of the Celtics in 2017, signed a two-year contract with the team this summer after splitting his rookie season between Boston and the Maine Red Claws of the G-League.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — No. 2 Clemson will employ two quarterbacks when the Tigers visit Texas A&M tonight. Coach Dabo Swinney says both Kelly Bryant and freshman Trevor Lawrence will play. Both did well in an easy 48-7 win in the season opener last week. The Aggies will go with Kellen Mond, who competed with last year’s first-game starter Nick Starkel throughout camp before getting the nod in the first game.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rain has washed out all track activity today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so the field for tomorrow’s Brickyard 400 has been set by points. Kyle Busch will start on the pole, Kevin Harvick will start second and Martin Truex Jr. third. Drivers will have no practice or any other track time before the race.
