Charges filed against Colten Treu in hit-and-run case

Chippewa County (WQOW) – The man accused of killing three young Girl Scouts and a mother appeared in court again on Tuesday.

Colten Treu, 21, is now facing 10 felony charges and 1 misdemeanor charge in Chippewa County. Four of those counts are for homicide by intoxicated driving and four counts of hit and run resulting in death.

If convicted, he could get up to 280 years in prison. According to the criminal complaint, Treu admitted to huffing aerosol fumes prior to the crash.

The scene of the crash has now become a memorial to those whose lives were lost. Flowers, teddy bears, balloons and a cross have been placed there by community members.

Treu is due back in court for a review hearing on December 11.
