Cadott man wanted in fatal 2017 Onalaska crash

La Crosse (WXOW) – An arrest warrant is out for a Cadott man who is charged with killing a Black River Falls woman last June in a crash at an Onalaska highway intersection.

The warrant for Steven J. Kasper, 40, was issued on August 13. A charge of Homicide by Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle was filed on August 1 against him.

On June 19, 2017, Kasper was headed west on Highway 16. The investigation showed Kasper ran a red light and hit a vehicle driven by 66-year-old Rebecca Wilkinson of Black River Falls.

She died from injuries in the crash.

When interviewed by investigators, Kasper said he was unfamiliar with the area. He told them he didn’t realize the traffic light was red until he got into the intersection and hit Wilkenson’s vehicle.

The criminal complaint said that although Kasper had been drinking, tests showed he was under the legal limit for intoxication. He said he’d had one beer about 45 minutes before the crash.

Investigators also looked at his cell phone but didn’t find anything that indicated he was on the phone at the time of the crash.

If convicted on the charge, Kasper faces up to ten years in prison.
