Eau Claire (WQOW) – Every month, News 18 recognizes one person who helps make the community an even better place. In May, we celebrate a woman who spends most of her free time helping others at the senior center and Chippewa Valley Museum.

Gladys Webb is a greeter at the L.E. Phillips Senior Center. She joined in 2000 and the people there quickly became family. The way she tells it, every week she spends a couple hours hanging out with her friends. Heck, even the mail carrier is excited to see her.

For the last 15 years she’s also been an integral part of the Chippewa Valley museum, helping paint after remodeling and packing up traveling exhibits. “Sixteen-foot walls and I painted them and I was proud of it to be able to climb up and down the ladder,” Webb said. “If they need some muscles, they call me,” she laughed.

In past years, she has even taken over raising chicks for visiting students for the farm life exhibit. “The fellow that had been doing the baby chicks for quite a few years, he turned 90 a couple of years ago, and he decided it was time to retire,” Webb said. “There was nobody there to do the chicks, and I said, ‘well I would do them.'” Gladys would go there every w I would go there every morning to clean out the coop and put put fresh water and fresh food.”

Staff call her a powerhouse who keeps the wheels turning. To Webb, it’s just making friends. In fact, her friends say no matter what the task, Webb gets it done. To her, getting to help others is just a bonus. “The people make the place,” Webb said. “It isn’t work, it’s just fun to be there.”

Webb said there are so many opportunities to volunteer in the Chippewa Valley it doesn’t make sense not to help out.
