Eau Claire (WQOW) –  The Wesley Beschorner era for the UW-Eau Claire football team has officially reached the next phase. As this afternoon, the Blugolds kicked-off their spring practice schedule for 2019 at Carson Park.

Eau Claire finished 4-and-6 overall last season, but are hoping to take an even bigger leap in 2019 and keep the program trending in the right direction. But for today, it was was all about the excitement to get back on the field.

“I think the team’s vibing well,” says senior outside linebacker Sam Romanski. “I think it’s a lot of positive energy and that everyone else is kind of feeling the same way. A lot of positive energy, and heading in the right direction. You kind of have a leash on you, kind of being pulled back all the time with D-3 spring ball, but it will just be nice to be outside and run around.”

The Blugolds are returning talent on both sides of the ball, and the new coach is hoping the practices will improve every facet of their game.

“Watching them going out and competing against each other, and seeing how much they can raise their level every single day, every single play is really my expectation,” says head coach Wesley Beschorner. “Watching them finish and coming away from practice knowing we got better.”

Beschorner and the Blugolds still have a long way to go before next season begins. Meaning plenty of time to install new schemes, learn new terminology and all the other X’s and O’s. But Beschorner does have a division one coaching background, and is using that knowledge and approach for his new team.

“You can definitely see that he has some different ideas and scheme-wise it’s a little more detailed now, compared to the past,” say Romanski. “It’s kind of cool when you walk past his office and and you see him watching film of some division one games mixed with division three games. And I’m just excited to see how that offensive scheme works.”

“I think this year is a little bit different than past years. Everyone just wants to compete and just win,” say junior offensive lineman Drew Schrader. “We know we have all the athletes, we know we have all the talent we could possibly need, and I think we’re all just ready for it.”

The Blugolds open the 2019 regular season at Carson Park against Loras College on September 7.
