Eau Claire (WQOW) — The Eau Claire School Board heard a proposal to upgrade the athletic facilities at Memorial High School at its meeting on Monday.

Memorial Athletics Director Kevin Thompson told the board that a group of people, parents, developers and coaches have come forward asking for better facilities. The $2.4 million project would include synthetic turf for the soccer and football field, resurfacing the track, a new decorative plaza, bathrooms and upgrades to the lights.

Thompson told the board that this would be a way to cut some costs, because the school would not have to bus athletes elsewhere for events.

Thompson said they have donors in place for half of the project. He proposed things like naming rights, advertising, the state trust fund and other sources could pay for the other $1.2 million.

The stakeholders would like to have the project completed by September 2019. He said for that timeline to work, the plan would need to be approved by the board by its February 4 meeting.
