Chippewa Valley Housing Task Force discusses affordable housing solutions

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Dozens gathered Thursday morning to talk about how to create more affordable housing solutions in the Chippewa Valley.

The Chippewa Valley Housing Task Force, made up of leaders from Eau Claire and Altoona, talked with people from local education and finance sectors, and homeless programs. The task force hopes to bridge connections with these sectors to find unique approaches to affordable housing. The group also shred data it’s been collecting for the past two months.

"The most recent data, through the ALICE data, was very interesting in that it’s really showing that trend growing in terms of the folks who are not experiencing poverty per say, but are in that kind of difficult middle ground," said Scott Allen, director of Community Development for the City of Eau Claire. "That is certainly increasing over the last 6 to 8, 10 years."

Allen said it’s not just housing costs. Daily life expenses like daycare and health insurance are hurting people’s budgets. The group is looking at new construction solutions and improving current housing. The task force is considering polices, financial incentives and inspiration from other community successes. The next meeting is in October.
