Eau Claire (WQOW)- The Blugold Marching Band is bigger than ever this year.
The band kicked off its week-long marching band camp Monday, with two practices at Carson Park and one at the Haas Fine Arts Center.
This year, the band has 400 members, including 69 trumpet players. The director says that makes it the largest marching band in the Midwest.
About 200 incoming freshman applied and they could only accept 140, to balance out the band.
Student leaders are excited to lead such a large group.
"They’re a great, great, great group always super willing to help the band in any way they can," drum major Nathan Czech said. "They’re super willing to do their best. I think for me, that’s the biggest thing, is that everyone is committed. Everyone is committed to being great and committed to what we have here for sure."
The Blugold Marching Band will perform for the first time in the 2018-2019 school year Saturday, September 8 at halftime of the Blugold football game vs. St. Norbert.
