Altoona Police Department hosts German officers during exchange program

Altoona (WQOW) – For the next two weeks, German police officers will learn what it’s like to work in American law enforcement.

The Altoona Police Department is hosting nine German officers from the Hamburg Police Department, in an effort to create international friendship and educate officers about foreign law enforcement. One of the officers has been intrigued by how different the justice systems are.

"They put a lot of guys first to jail and then directly to a trial," Hamburg Police Patrol Captain Marcus Dedmann said. "This is different to us as we will write a report. When they have a permanent stay in Germany, we let them go home and then we call them in for court, so this is different here."

The German officers toured the Eau Claire County Government Center Monday, and will join officers on ride alongs and training exercises. The officers are part of the STAR International Police Exchange Organization, which was founded in 1985 by American and German officers.

The exchange program currently includes officers from Spain and Switzerland, and some Altoona officers are planning to travel to Europe next year.
