Chippewa Valley Railroad roundhouse gets new metal roof

Eau Claire (WQOW) – A historic building at Carson Park is getting a much needed upgrade.

Contractors and volunteers started installing a new metal roof at the Chippewa Valley Railroad’s roundhouse building Monday. The old metal roofing was installed in 1983 by students from Chippewa Valley Technical College, and railroad worker Dave Peterson said their installation did not age well.

"Over the years the roofing has just started to fail," Peterson said. "It was a sheet metal roof, and back then they attached the ribs directly to the purlins with screws. Well over the years, the expansion of the metal, and contraction, worked holes and they started leaking."

Six volunteers from the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association were on hand to help out with the project, which is scheduled to be finished on Tuesday.

The Chippewa Valley Railroad offers miniature train rides down a half-mile long railway through the Carson Park woods. The trains will run their last rides of the summer this weekend.
