One dead, another person missing after boating incident on Lake Wissota

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) – One man is dead and police are still searching for another after they went missing Saturday afternoon on Lake Wissota.

According to Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk the call came in Sunday morning at 11:20.

Upon arrival, the sheriff’s office found a pontoon with nobody on board up against the shoreline south of the Rod & Gun boat landing and near the dam.

Crews started searching the area and got a call about an hour later that there was a body found in the water near the dam tied to a tube. The person was pronounced dead.

Another male, believed to be the operator of the boat, is still missing. Sheriff Kowalczyk said at this point it is a recovery operation.

Kowalczyk said both men are in their young 20s. They believe they went missing sometime after 2 p.m. Saturday, because they sent a photo of themselves on the boat to family members around that time. The men were camping at O’Neil Creek Campground, and their family became concerned when the two did not return to the campground.

The sheriff’s office will continue searching until dark Sunday.

Weather Outlook: Still slippery tonight, sunshine returns tomorrow

Drizzle picked back up this afternoon, and much like yesterday froze to untreated surfaces. The good news is the salt and sand put down yesterday is still working, and many municipalities were out again putting down more today. Still, any small stretch of even main roads where salt and/or sand have washed away from cars driving over it could quickly develop slippery spots from this very thin layer of ice
