Possible factors behind Eau Claire bus driver shortage

Eau Claire (WQOW) – On Wednesday, Student Transit in Eau Claire had its annual pre-school year welcome back meeting, while facing a bus driver shortage.

Student Transit GM Marty Klukas said the shortage ebbs and flows. Right now there are 120 drivers, but they could use about 10 more. Without that, it’s made it hard to find people to drive, and take shifts for field trips, extracurricular activities and fill shifts if another driver is sick.

However, one of the biggest reasons behind the shortage is the split shifts. Drivers will come in early in the morning for a few hours and finish up rides later in the afternoon. For some, that’s just not convenient.

Klukas said it’s a good position for people who don’t work typical hours, but that may not be the only factor.

"I think most people are like me and maybe you, ‘I could never drive a school bus,’" Klukas said. "I’m going to tell you, once you get in here and do it, you wonder why you didn’t do it a little sooner."

If you’re interested in being a driver, you can visit Student Transit’s Facebook page, or its website.
