Do you know how to prevent heat exhaustion?

Chippewa Falls (WQOW)- Heat exhaustion can happen to anyone, but athletes are more prone to it. 

Dr. Adam Atkins, a sports medicine physician at Marshfield Clinic, said when the temperature is above 90 degrees people are more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion. 

Atkins said heat exhaustion is when your body shuts down and you stop sweating. He said there’s also changes in your mental status and you may feel confused or dizzy. 

He said for athletes it’s important to practice when it’s not so hot outside, stay hydrated and take breaks. 

He said if you’re experiencing heat exhaustion you should get in a cool or shady place, get an ice bath and if the person impacted hasn’t perked back up within 15 minutes, it’s time to see a doctor. 

He said he worries the most about young football players. 

"Because the first couple games of the season are very, very hot, especially players that might play both offense and defense and rarely get breaks during the game, they’re at the highest increase of having heat exhaustion problems," Atkins said. 

Atkins said it’s also important to wear cool clothes in the summer that allow you to sweat.
