More than 25 percent of eligible Eau Claire voters cast ballot in primary

Eau Claire (WQOW) – The partisan primary drew in more voters than the past few elections in Eau Claire.

Partisan primaries typically get between 6-15 percent of eligible voters. The Eau Claire City Elections Office reported more than 25 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballot as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. 

Eau Claire County Clerk Janet Loomis told News 18 they were expecting about 30 percent of eligible voters to cast their ballots. 

Eau Claire City Clerk Carrie Riepl discussed how they project the number of voters through this evening. 

"We’re thinking about 30 percent turnout. Typically that 8 percent doubles by 5 and then that number again doubles by 8 p.m.," Riepl told News 18. 

That means polling places need more volunteers. Eau Claire City Elections Specialist Cindy Anderson said with such a high turnout they need more help.

"We’ve recruited a lot more poll workers in anticipation for the November election. We kind of want workers in and learning in August. So then for November they’ll be up to speed for the big governor’s election," Anderson told News 18. 

Anderson said she expects a much higher turnout in the November election and encourages everyone to go vote.
