New bike and pedestrian bridge opens in Menomonie

Menomonie (WQOW) – Menomonie bikers now have much easier access to more than 17 miles of bike trails in the city.

The Junction Trail Bridge north of Oak Avenue opened Thursday, giving bikers and pedestrians a path to cross over Interstate 94.

It used to be a railroad bridge, now re-purposed for people. The goal is to create a more biking-friendly community in Menomonie.

"When I first became mayor about five years ago, the old railroad bridge was always an eyesore," Menomonie Mayor Randy Knaack said. "Being an eyesore, we decided to do something about it. So five years later, now we have a trail going across I-94 to service the north town residents of Menomonie."

The year-long project cost more than $800,000, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation covered more than half of it. Mayor Knaack told News 18 he’s gotten a lot of positive feedback from the community due to its safety and convenience.
