Starting the conversation about underage drinking early

Eau Claire (WQOW)- New numbers show you may need to talk to your kids about alcohol, sooner than you think.

Community health educator Lilliam Pinero said it’s important to talk to your child as soon as you feel like they will understand the conversation about alcohol.

Pinero said one in 10 Eau Claire County high school students report drinking alcohol before age 13, and that’s decreased 10 percent from their survey in 2004.

She said that proves preventative efforts do help, and it starts at home.

"Youth risk behavior survey of 2017 showed 85 percent of high school youth reporting that they believe that their parents think it’s wrong or very wrong to underage drink," Pinero said.

Pinero said families who want to commit to not allow alcohol use by anyone under 21 in their home can join the Parents Connecting Network.

Six-hundred families across Eau Claire have already joined.
